“How much per metre?” is the first question almost every prospective owner asks, and it is the wrong shape of question. A 25 m boat finished for domestic day charters and a 25 m boat finished for USD 6,000-a-night private charter share a length and almost nothing else. Here is what actually moves the number.

Why does timber cost scale faster than length?

Because a hull is a volume, not a line. Add five metres of length to a phinisi and the beam and depth grow with it; the timber you need grows roughly with the enclosed volume, not the LOA. Add to that the fact that the longest, cleanest ironwood baulks for keel sections are the scarcest and most expensive material in the yard, and it becomes clear why cost per metre climbs as boats get bigger.

How much does class level change the price?

Indonesian-flag vessels are classed by BKI. Building to BKI standards adds documentation, surveyor attendance, and sometimes scantling or equipment upgrades you would not otherwise fit. International class — Lloyd’s Register, RINA, ABS, DNV — is available on higher-spec builds and adds considerably more: tighter rules, more engineering, more inspection.

The decision belongs at the very start, because retro-fitting class requirements into a hull that is already planked is the most expensive way to discover them. This block is where budgets quietly break, because it is bought in hard currency with international lead times. Working reference points from published vessel specs: a 29 m phinisi such as Leticia runs twin Mitsubishi 4D10 main engines with a 40 kVA generator; a 21.38 m vessel like Natural Phinisi carries around 5,000 litres of fresh water. How much does the interior really add?

Interior finish is the widest variable in the whole budget. The published fleet gives useful anchors: luxury phinisi typically allocate around 15–18 sqm to twin cabins, 18–23 sqm to deluxe doubles and 20–30 sqm to master or sea-view suites. What is not in the build price?

  • Operating licences and company set-up held by an Indonesian legal entity.
  • Insurance, first-year crew recruitment and training.
  • Delivery voyage fuel and crew from Sulawesi to your operating base.
  • National park fees and per-trip permits, which are set by the park authority and change.
