How a Phinisi Is Built: The Full Step-by-Step Process (2027 Guide)
A phinisi is built shell-first: the ironwood keel is laid, hull planks are shaped and fastened to each other with wooden dowels, and the frames go in afterwards — the reverse of Western boatbuilding. A ~30 m hull takes 9–12 months; a complete vessel with systems and interior takes 12–18 months, and about 18–24 months from keel to licensed charter operation.

If you have only ever seen a phinisi finished — teak decks, white sails furled, tenders on the aft platform — the building process looks improbable when you finally stand in front of it. There is no shed, no jig, no CNC-cut frame kit. There is a beach, a row of hulls in different stages, and a group of carpenters who know the shape they are aiming at because they have built it before. How is the timber chosen and seasoned?
Timber selection is the first real engineering decision, and it is made by species rather than by grade certificate. Ulin — Borneo ironwood, Eusideroxylon zwageri — goes into the keel and the lower planking because it is exceptionally dense and naturally resistant to rot and marine borers. Bitti (Vitex cofassus) is used for frames, ribs and structure that is not permanently immersed. Teak takes the deck, superstructure and interior joinery for its stability and oil content, and lighter hardwoods such as bayam are used above the waterline to keep weight and the centre of gravity down.
Everything is seasoned before it is cut to shape. Sun-drying runs for weeks to months, and heavy ironwood sections may be left for up to a year. Skipping this is the single most common cause of a hull that later works, weeps and needs early re-caulking. What happens at the keel laying?
The keel is the spine and the ceremonial start of the project. In the Konjo tradition the laying is marked with prayers and a small ritual, and the date is chosen rather than merely scheduled. From an owner’s point of view this is also the moment the contract clock starts, because everything downstream is measured from keel-laying: payment milestones, delivery dates and class attendance.
Practically, the keel is assembled from ironwood baulks, scarfed and fastened, then set level on blocks on the sand with the stem and sternpost stepped onto it. The overall length and the rake of stem and stern established here fix the boat’s proportions for good.
Why are the planks fitted before the frames?
This is the defining feature of the method. In shell-first construction the hull skin is built up plank by plank, each one edge-fastened to its neighbour — traditionally with wooden dowels (pasak) driven through pre-drilled holes — so the shell becomes self-supporting before any internal framing exists. Only once the shape is closed are the frames and ribs fitted inside it, following the shape the planks have taken rather than dictating it.
Nothing about this is casual, but very little of it is drawn. How do the frames, deck and rig go in?
With the shell closed, bitti frames are shaped and fitted, floors and beam shelves tie the structure together, and deck beams go across. The deck is then laid — teak on higher-spec boats — and the superstructure built up. Caulking of the hull seams runs alongside, and the hull is faired and coated below the waterline.
Masts and standing rigging come late. Most working phinisi today carry a rig that is used opportunistically, with two engines doing the real work at a cruising speed of about 10–12 knots; sail area is specified for the look, the motion damping and the occasional genuine downwind leg, and owners should be honest with themselves about which of the three they are paying for.
What happens between launch and the first paying guest?
Launch is not delivery. After the hull goes into the water there is a fitting-out period alongside, then sea trials for speed, handling, vibration, noise and systems, then a snag list that somebody has to chase. In parallel comes tonnage measurement, class survey, registration and the operating licences — allow roughly 3–6 months for the certification tail even when the boat itself is finished. Is the wooden-dowel construction strong enough for a commercial vessel?

Can I watch my own boat being built?
