Phinisi Build Timeline Month by Month: What Happens and When
A complete phinisi takes 12–18 months to build, and about 18–24 months from keel laying to a fully licensed charter operation. Roughly 9–12 months of that is the hull on a ~30 m boat, systems and interior overlap the back half, and the final 3–6 months are measurement, class survey, registration and operating permits — the part almost every first-time owner forgets to schedule.

Build schedules fail in predictable places. Nobody misses a delivery date because the carpenters were slow at planking; they miss it because the generator sat in a port for six weeks, or because the surveyor could not attend until after the season started. This is the month-by-month view of a mid-size phinisi programme, written so you can see where the risk actually sits.

Smaller boats compress this: a 20–25 m hull with basic accommodation is reported at 6–8 months for the hull itself. Larger and more complex projects stretch it — commercial builders quote 18–24 months for luxury yachts and 24–36 months for superyacht-class work.
Months 0–3: what has to be finished before the keel?
Three things, and they are not sequential — they run together. First, the arrangement: cabin count, cabin sizes, deck layout, dive or leisure facilities. Second, the engineering package: lines, scantlings, hydrostatics and the stability approach, because a traditional hull is built without drawings and the documentation has to be created deliberately (see naval architecture and stability engineering). Third, timber: ordered, delivered and stacked, because heavy ironwood sections may need up to a year to season and nobody can compress that later.

Months 3–12: how does the hull come together?
Keel laying is both the ceremonial and the contractual start. From there the crew — typically three or four full-time carpenters plus the master builder on a mid-size hull — works shell-first: planks are shaped and edge-fastened to each other, often with wooden dowels, until the hull skin is self-supporting. Frames and ribs go in afterwards, shaped to the hull that exists rather than the other way round.
Then deck beams, deck, superstructure and masts. On a ~30 m boat this whole block is 9–12 months. Rain slows it; a poorly stocked timber shed slows it far more. This is also the period when an owner’s representative earns their fee — the hull is where irreversible decisions get made quietly. Months 9–15: systems and interior
Fit-out overlaps construction by design. Engine beds, shaft lines, tankage and cable runs have to be planned while the structure is still open, and joinery modules are built ashore in parallel. The critical path here is almost never labour — it is procurement. Main engines, generators, air-conditioning plant, watermakers and switchboards are imported, and a six-to-ten week slip on any one of them shows up directly in the delivery date.
Practical rule: place equipment orders at keel laying, not at planking completion. And fix the cabin arrangement before joinery starts, because moving a bulkhead after the joiners have cut is expensive in both money and goodwill. Months 15–18: launch, trials and the snag list
Launch from a beach yard is a genuine event and a genuine engineering exercise. After that comes fitting out afloat, then sea trials: speed against the design figure (most phinisi cruise 10–12 knots), handling, vibration, noise levels in guest cabins, and every system run under load. Expect a snag list; expect one or two rectification loops. Boats that go from launch to charter in three weeks have simply moved the snag list onto their first guests.
Months 18–24: the certification tail
This is the phase owners routinely leave out of their financial model. Tonnage measurement and registration sit with the Ministry of Transportation, class and seaworthiness with BKI, and the commercial operating licences with the Indonesian legal entity that will run the vessel. Allow roughly 3–6 months, run it in parallel with fitting-out wherever the authorities permit, and treat the whole 18–24 month keel-to-operation figure as an estimate rather than a guarantee. What causes the most common delays?
- Late owner decisions on layout and finish — the single biggest controllable cause.
- Timber not seasoned because it was ordered with the keel rather than before it.
- Import lead times on machinery and electrical equipment.
- Surveyor availability, especially if you launch into a busy period.
- Wet-season working conditions, December to March, which slow beach-yard work.
Aim to be certified and crewed before the Komodo season opens in April rather than during it. Missing the window costs a full season of revenue — a much larger number than any build overrun.

Can a phinisi be built faster than 12 months?
A small, simply finished hull can be. A commercial liveaboard with class documentation, imported systems and a full interior cannot be compressed much without pulling timber before it is seasoned — which you will pay for later in caulking and re-planking.
When should I place equipment orders?
At keel laying. Engines, gensets, air-conditioning and watermakers have the longest lead times in the project and they sit on the critical path from month nine onward.
Does the wet season stop construction?

What happens if the yard misses the date?
