Gross Tonnage Explained for Phinisi Owners (and Why It Sets Your Costs)
Gross tonnage (GT) is a measure of a vessel’s total enclosed volume, not its weight. On a phinisi it is calculated from the measured internal volume and it then drives almost everything that follows: which ship certificate you hold, how many crew you must carry, what safety equipment is required, and how often you are surveyed. Design choices that add enclosed volume add GT — and cost.

Owners tend to discover gross tonnage twice: once when the measurement letter arrives and once when someone explains that the extra deckhouse they wanted has just moved the boat into a different manning requirement. Understanding GT early lets you make those trade-offs on purpose rather than by accident.
What exactly is gross tonnage?
Despite the name, gross tonnage has nothing to do with tons of weight. It is a dimensionless figure derived from the total enclosed volume of a vessel — hull spaces plus enclosed superstructure. A boat that is heavier is not automatically higher GT; a boat with more enclosed rooms is.

For a passenger-carrying phinisi, GT is the number that regulators care about and the one you will quote for the rest of the vessel’s life.
Why does GT set your operating costs?
Because the Indonesian regulatory framework scales requirements from tonnage. In practical terms GT influences:

- Minimum manning — crew numbers and certificates of competency required aboard.
- Safety equipment — life rafts, life jackets, firefighting appliances, radio and navigation equipment.
- Survey scope and intervals — bigger and more complex means more inspection.
- Various fees and charges that are calculated on tonnage.
None of these individually breaks a budget. Together, moving up a band adds permanent annual cost, so it is worth knowing where the bands sit before the arrangement is frozen. What does a real phinisi GT look like?
Published examples give a feel for the relationship between size and measured tonnage. Natural Phinisi measures 21.38 m LOA with a 4.50 m beam and is documented at 40 GT, carrying around 5,000 litres of fresh water. Larger charter vessels — Majik at 42 m LOA, 7.5 m beam and 2.2 m draft with 5 cabins and 13 crew, or Neptune One at 39 m with 8 cabins for 16 guests — carry substantially more enclosed volume across saloon, cabins and deckhouse, and their tonnage figures rise accordingly.
The useful lesson is that beam and superstructure volume drive GT more visibly than length alone. Two 30 m hulls, one with a single-level deckhouse and one with an enclosed upper saloon and above-deck master suite, are not the same vessel in the eyes of a tonnage measurer.

Why do conversions and refits trigger re-measurement?
Because the measurement describes the vessel as it was, and you have just changed it. Enclosing a previously open deck, adding a deckhouse, or converting a cargo hull into passenger accommodation all change enclosed volume — and therefore GT, and therefore possibly your certificate, manning and equipment obligations.
