Dive Deck Design for Komodo Liveaboards: Layout, Compressors and Safety
A working Komodo dive deck needs a kitting station per diver, tank racks that stay secure in a beam sea, two rinse tanks, a dedicated camera table, a ventilated compressor space away from cabins, and a tender launch that works in current. Get those six right and the boat runs four dives a day calmly; get them wrong and every dive becomes a queue on a wet, crowded deck.

Komodo is a current destination. Batu Bolong, Castle Rock, Crystal Rock and the Karang Makassar manta run are all sites where entries are timed, groups go in together, and the tender has to be exactly where it said it would be. A dive deck designed for calm-water diving will function here, but it will function slowly — and slow, on a four-dive day with sixteen guests, becomes the thing people remember.

How much space does each diver actually need?
The honest answer is: more than the drawing suggests. A diver kitting up occupies their bench, the tank behind it, the fins in front and the space to stand and turn. On a boat carrying sixteen guests — the capacity of a 39 m, eight-cabin arrangement such as Neptune One — that is sixteen simultaneous footprints, plus crew moving through to help.
Two design decisions rescue tight boats. First, split the group across two entry points so half the divers stage while half enter. Second, keep the through-route clear: the dive deck should never be the only path between the saloon and the stern. Where should the compressor go?
As far from guest cabins as you can put it, in a space that is ventilated for heat and for air quality, with the intake positioned clear of any engine or generator exhaust. Compressor noise carries through a wooden hull remarkably well, and a boat that fills tanks at 06:00 under the master cabin will collect complaints no interior finish can offset.
Nitrox capability is worth deciding at the design stage rather than adding later: membrane systems need space, power and their own ventilation, and the electrical load has to be accounted for alongside air conditioning and the watermaker. How do tenders and skiffs work in Komodo currents?
Most Komodo diving is done from a dive skiff rather than off the mother ship, because the sites demand drop-and-pick-up in moving water. That places three requirements on the design:
- Launch and recovery that one crew member can manage — davit or crane sized correctly, with a clear swinging arc that does not cross the dive deck.
- Skiff stowage that does not block the aft deck when the boat is at anchor for lunch or an evening.
- A boarding arrangement that works when the skiff is moving relative to the ship, with handholds at the right height and a ladder that does not sit under the skiff’s tubes.
Sailing times to the dive sites shape the daily rhythm and therefore the deck workload. Operator estimates at 7–10 knots put Batu Bolong and Manta Point around 2.5–3 hours from Labuan Bajo, Gili Lawa Darat and Castle Rock around 4–5 hours, and Padar around 3–4 hours — approximate figures that wind and current will change. What safety equipment belongs in the design?
- Emergency oxygen — stowed where it can be reached in seconds from the entry platform, not in a locker below.
- A casualty route — a clear path from the water to a flat, shaded surface where a diver can be laid down and treated.
- Surface marker and recall systems, plus a functioning means of locating divers drifting in current.
- A written evacuation plan with realistic times to Labuan Bajo, since chamber access is not immediate from most Komodo sites.

These belong in the specification from the start, because retro-fitting an oxygen locker and a proper casualty area into a finished aft deck is both expensive and visibly compromised. A structured new-build program puts them in the arrangement drawings.

How big should a liveaboard dive deck be?
Big enough for one fixed kitting station per diver plus a clear through-route and crew working space. Count the stations, not the square metres — a large deck with shared benches still queues.
Do I need nitrox on a Komodo liveaboard?
It is increasingly expected by experienced divers and it is far cheaper to design in than to add. Budget the space, power and ventilation at the arrangement stage even if you fit the membrane later.
Should the compressor run at night?
Ideally not, and good arrangement design means you do not have to choose. Filling in the late afternoon with an isolated, well-insulated compressor space keeps guests asleep and crew unhurried.
Can a dive deck be added to an existing phinisi?
